Veteran Mike Buehre Honored with Quilt of Valor

LIDGERWOOD, N.D. — Local veteran Mike Buehre was recently honored for his military service with a Quilt of Valor presented by the Stitching Hearts Quilt of Valor group from Abercrombie.

Mike proudly served in the United States Army from February 1969 to 1970 during the Vietnam War. He completed basic training at Fort Lewis, Washington, before attending armored tank training at Fort Knox, Kentucky. Mike received specialized training operating the Sheridan tank, a lightweight armored vehicle developed for use in jungle warfare.

During his service, Mike served as a driver, gunner, loader, and tank commander on the Sheridan tank. He spent 13 months serving in Vietnam, Laos, and Cambodia.

Mike recalls seeing planes flying overhead spraying Agent Orange throughout the dense jungle terrain, where visibility was often extremely limited because of the heavy foliage.

Despite the challenges of war, Mike says he is very proud to have served his country and is deeply grateful to have safely returned home.

In addition to his military service, Mike dedicated 53 years as a volunteer firefighter in Lidgerwood and has been a member of the American Legion for 54 years.

Mike was nominated for the Quilt of Valor recognition by Richland County Veteran Service Officer Mary Vetter.

The Quilt of Valor presentation serves as a meaningful tribute to Mike’s service, sacrifice, and lifelong commitment to his community and country.
